I try to swim a couple of times a week but is this enough to lift it? I already have counselling and am recovering but just wondered what experiences others have had with exercise helping. Swimming always relaxes me and lifts my spirits. Serious answers please. Thanks.

No one exercise is better than any other in geeneral terms.

There are lots of theories about how and why exercise affects mood - both psychological and chemical - and none have been totally proven or understood... but what we exercise proffesionals do agree is that it does work!

The thing to remember, in my humble opinion, is that you are dealing with the brain as well as the body - and the brain is about as individual as you can get. Consequently, do the exercises that you enjoy doing. They may not work so well for the next person, but if they work for you - they work.

Try to get a reasonable length of time into your exercise sessions - 45mins to 90mins being ideal - asmany times a week as you have time/energy for.

Good luck.

If warm enough, get outside and run or walk a little bit. Riding a bike is fun too, but the best answer is whatever exercise you enjoy the most. The more you enjoy it, the more, you'll do it. Shake it up a little bit and keep at it. Exercise with friends if you can and that will help you even more.

I was just diagnosed with depression recently, and I find that using an exercise bike for about 20 to 30 minutes a day has increased my energy significantly. You HAVE to really work out, though. You must break a sweat and you must feel like you've accomplished something afterwards. I usually work out in the evenings after my day, and it usually helps me release all the emotion that has built up throughout. Try to motivate yourself to do it. I know it's hard, but it's really helped!

I found a combination of an exercise bike till my legs felt like they were going to drop off then a punchbag till I could barely lift my arms helped a lot.

I like dancing- it puts me in a good mood. Since I do ballroom dancing, I practice for 15-30 minutes each day.
Swimming is good- can you do it more often? If not, walking, yoga, pilates or sports/biking are also good.
Do things to raise your endorphins and you'll begin to feel better. Here are some other ideas:
