I've lived here over thirty years and I don't want to miss anything.

If you are into unusual island adventures, I'd recommend you go to the Friends of Haleakala website and sign up for a service trip inside the crater.

You get to hike into the crater and stay at one of the cabins for two nights. The "catch" is that you have to do a few hours of volunteer work such as maintaining the cabins, pulling out invasive plants and/or restoring native ones. However, this is a small price to pay for the experience and for the chance to stay in the cabins without having to wait in line with regular visitors who must reserve the cabin via a lottery system with the NPS. (Friends of Haleakaka may or may not charge a small fee for the trip depending on the trip logistics, such as tipping park volunteers for their interpretative work or for van transportation for non-loop trips.)

We did a service trip last Labor Day weekend and had a great time. We hiked down the Sliding Sands, stayed two nights at Paliku Cabin and hiked down the Kaupo Gap trail.

They usually have 2-night trips on holiday weekends so if you live on the island, you do not have to miss work.

Good luck!
