I know that there are many similar questions asked about this matter, but I am really confused. In one hand I see the majority of Muslims are hard-working peacful people, but on the other hand I see many verses in the Quran that order Muslims to KILL unbelievers and be HARSH to them.

One of the verses [4:89] read: "so take no friends from unbelievers until they flee submit to Islam. But if they turn renegades, seize them and KILL them wherever ye find them"

Does anyone have a logical explanation for the discrepancy?

Wrong place to be... if you need peace and love, embrace jesus christ, you will have eternal life, and be free from this guilt of killing innocent people as infidels..God bless you all.

No, not at all. Most of those verses like the ones you've posted talk about fighters not unbelievers. Every one who fights Muslims in an unbeliever (according to Islam, since true believers don't kill innocents). But not every unbeliever in a fighter. In Islam, when nobody oppresses you nor fight, you have to be peaceful to them regardless of who they are. Unfortunately, you didn't post the verses of Quran which asks Muslims to be kind and merciful to others. There is a verse saying : " No obligation in religion". This means that Muslims must not force others to embrace Islam. It would be stupid if they did this!! And most of these verses like the one you've posted talks about Pagan Arabs who used to fight and kill Muslims long time ago. I recommend to read more in the Quran if you want to find those peaceful verses.

Peacekeeper wrote..... "We know that America was once at war with Vietnam. Suppose the President of America or the General of the American Army told the American soldiers during the war: "Wherever you find the Vietnamese, kill them". Today if I say that the American President said, "Wherever you find Vietnamese, kill them" without giving the context, I will make him sound like a butcher. But if I quote him in context, that he said it during a war, it will sound very logical, as he was trying to boost the morale of the American soldiers during the war."................. Very true. However, they have moved on and do not have a book quoting outdated things that could be taken out of context., not forced worship from a government and are free to speak out against war and to decide their own fate. Your argument proves that the Koran is outdated and irrelevant to a modern society if your saying that it can be taken out of context. It is the same as the bible.. written by man to control man and nothing to do with any spiritual entity.

You shouldnt worry yourself about single verses taken out of context.

You should be worried about how those verses are interpreted.

In the majority of muslim countries where people receive Islamic ed, the teachings are to respect life in all forms and avoid treating others badly.

The verses highlighted in many areas of the quran are very few and are highlighted for nothing but to raise hate and animosity towards this great religion.

Quran was revelaed in times of war.

Now a days we are commanded to defend our selves which is different from attacking.

Other wise u would have millions of muslims killing people, not only a few poor manipulated guys who have gone astray.

Salam aleikum...

If Muslims are peaceful why don't they stand up against the extremists and proclaim to the world this is evil?

2015-02-20 06:11:14 · answer #8 · answered by Don 1 · 4 2

well some people would say yes they should, but these are the extremists. there is actually a verse in the quran that says "you have your religion and ill have mine". allah created all of us even if you arent a muslim so there is no reason for anyone to kill nonmuslims. i dont know whre you found that quote but it was probably from an extremist

Context of verse is during battlefield

Critics of Islam actually quote this verse out of context. In order to understand the context, we need to read from verse 1 of this surah. It says that there was a peace treaty between the Muslims and the Mushriqs (pagans) of Makkah. This treaty was violated by the Mushriqs of Makkah. A period of four months was given to the Mushriqs of Makkah to make amends. Otherwise war would be declared against them. Verse 5 of Surah Taubah says:

"But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is oft-forgiving, Most merciful."
[Al-Qur’an 9:5]

This verse is quoted during a battle.

Example of war between America and Vietnam

We know that America was once at war with Vietnam. Suppose the President of America or the General of the American Army told the American soldiers during the war: "Wherever you find the Vietnamese, kill them". Today if I say that the American President said, "Wherever you find Vietnamese, kill them" without giving the context, I will make him sound like a butcher. But if I quote him in context, that he said it during a war, it will sound very logical, as he was trying to boost the morale of the American soldiers during the war.
Verse 9:5 quoted to boost morale of Muslims during battle

Similarly in Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 the Qur’an says, "Kill the Mushriqs where ever you find them", during a battle to boost the morale of the Muslim soldiers. What the Qur’an is telling Muslim soldiers is, don’t be afraid during battle; wherever you find the enemies kill them.

Shourie jumps from verse 5 to verse 7

Arun Shourie is one of the staunchest critics of Islam in India. He quotes the same verse, Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 in his book ‘The World of Fatwahs’, on page 572. After quoting verse 5 he jumps to verse 7 of Surah Taubah. Any sensible person will realise that he has skipped verse 6.

Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 6 gives the answer

Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 6 gives the answer to the allegation that Islam promotes violence, brutality and bloodshed. It says:

"If one amongst the pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure that is because they are men without knowledge."
[Al-Qur’an 9:6]

The Qur’an not only says that a Mushriq seeking asylum during the battle should be granted refuge, but also that he should be escorted to a secure place. In the present international scenario, even a kind, peace-loving army General, during a battle, may let the enemy soldiers go free, if they want peace. But which army General will ever tell his soldiers, that if the enemy soldiers want peace during a battle, don’t just let them go free, but also escort them to a place of security?

This is exactly what Allah (swt) says in the Glorious Qur’an to promote peace in the world.
