If your mother has severe allergies, the best kind of dog is a stuffed one. There is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog, they just produce less allergens but if your mother is really allergic even the smaller amounts of allergens will bother her.

Also, it would be mean to the puppy to leave it home alone all day long while you parents are at work and you are at school.

I must say there are many answers here that just really are far from the actual truth. First of all, Miniature Schnauzers do not shed and they do not have the usual amount of pet dander that normally is the cause of the dog allergy, they are highly recommended for those with allergies. However, if the allergies are severe you may want to think twice about getting a dog at all. But for most people with dog allergies, schnauzers are a recommended breed. Schnauzers typically are easy to train and it shouldn't be too much of a problem with leaving them for long periods of time, just make sure to keep papers and shoes out of their reach. As far as them being dirty, I have to completely disagree, schnauzers require grooming at least once every couple of months, now if you choose to not care for your animal, they will get dirty just like any other dog who doesn't get a bath regularly. I would recommend you doing a lot of research before determining if this is the best breed for your situation, don't 'take too much advice from people who speak without knowing the facts. Good luck and hope you get the dog you've always wanted.

Seems like your mom has two very legitimate concerns. The first one, severe allergies, is one which would affect her if she is allergic to dogs because all dogs shed skin or dander and though some shed less than others, it still happens.
The other concern which is availability to take care of the dog is even more important. She is right that the dog will get lonely if she works all day and you are at school all day with extra-curricular activities after school. Those sports activities are important for you. If no one is home with the dog for most of the day, it could work if you had someone to take the dog for a walk and potty break around mid day or took your dog to a doggie day care. Then the dog gets attention in the day and gets your atttention after you come home. Maybe you could do some searching for doggie day care in your area. Compare prices and see what they have to offer then tell your mom about it. Maybe she would consider the dog in that case if her allergies aren't too bad. Miniature schnauzers are a breed that was created by using poodles in the mix which is why their coats are less shedding than other dogs. Most dogs that are poodle or poodle mix are minimal shedders. Still, your mom would need to be sure that this would not affect her allergies.

Make sure you get a dog for the right reasons. All dogs, no matter the breed, need attention from their family, so if your family just doesn't have the time to devote to the training and care of a dog, it probably isn't the right time to get one.

If your mom is severely allergic to dogs, a schnauzer probably isn't the best breed for her. There are no totally hypoallergenic dogs, but poodles tend to cause the least reactions. They do have to be groomed regularly (as do schnauzers) so keep this in mind when you are thinking about the care and attention a new dog will need. If your mom agrees to get a dog, you should try adopting and see if the rescue adopt from will allow you a trial period to see how your mom's allergies are affected. Not every person is allergic to ever dog so that's probably your best option.

Also keep in mind that puppies especially need a lot of training and socialization so if extra time is an issue, you should consider adopting an adult. He or she will still need training, attention, regular trips to the vet, possibly regular grooming, exercise, etc. but puppies are a LOT more work than adults.

If she sees a dog and sneezes then you shouldn't get a dog. However if she need hair from a dog to react then a mini schnauzer is the best one. Be aware that mini schnauzer is very loud. I have one and she thinks she's a gaurd dog. We have to keep her on a leash all the time or she will attack the neighbor's kids. If you get one as a puppy expose it to alot of people while it's young.
And as long as you take it for walks when you're home, give it love, and don't leave it locked up in a kennel all day while you're gone (That can hurt it over a long period of time... maybe lock it in a room with water and a bed.) a mini schnauzer is a good choice.
I hope you get your dog!

Your Mom has very valid concerns. Do not get a dog of any kind unless you are certain that your Mom can handle it. Imagine how terrible it would be for the dog and for you if you had to re-home the dog because of allergies. You could try fostering for a rescue group - but you need to let that rescue group know what you are doing, and why. Also, you need to be sure that you will have enough time for a dog - from whay you wrote in your post, it doesn't sound like you do.

It is your parents home you need to respect their rules. The dog would be very lonely. If your mother has allergies you need to respect her health. Do not be a spoiled brat, wait til you are on your own and can be truly responsible for it. Good dogs to get when allergies are involved are Poodles (any type) and Bichon Frise. Both of those have no dander, which is what she is most likely allergic to.

Sounds like your Mom is not ready for a dog. Getting a dog must be a commitment for the entire family. Dogs require a huge amount of time.

Dogs with sigle coats of dander may be the way to go for you. My boyfriend has bad alergies too and our neighbors have a single coat dog and he is fine with it.

no, they shed and are quite 'dirty' for dogs.

mini poodles, poodle mixes, sometimes chineese cresteds, I've heard bichon frise can be pretty okay with allergies
