I watched the movie Coolers; is this still a common practice... or just old school?

Old school in my opinion. The whole casino game nowadays is about keeping customer satisfaction and making sure customers keep coming back. The more they come back the more they keep playing and the more the odds favour the house.

Do you really think the things you see in movies are real?! Give me a break. If thats the case then I want to go to Harry Potters school, got any enrollment information? By the way, how can I hire Big Momma?
But seriously, in the United States casinos are held to a certain regulatory agency depending on the casino and location. That regulatory agency is STRICT, and would not tolerate any unethical activity. A cooler would be considered unethical.

I think that people that run casinos have enough knowledge of probability and statistics that they wouldn't be stupid enough to think that an "unlucky guy" could come in and kill a win streak.

I don't know about other games but casinos who deal poker use prop players and shill players to keep action in the game going. But as far as using players to disrupt others winning, that i don't know.
