You need to search websites, the Algonquin is a 3.5 star, nice place, I stayed there last year, they have some dates for $179, that's a pretty good deal for a nice hotel in NYC anything much cheaper would be in Brooklyn or a hostel: Link:

Also, I just booked a 3.5 star near the UN for $159, w/ kitchen. Email me if you would like more info on that.
But, essentially, you just have to check the various travel sites for the best deal, sometimes the best deals are on the hotel's own website.

Look on craigslist.org to find someone renting their apartment. It's usually much cheaper and more comfortable than a hotel.
