It all depends on the breed. Maine Coones can get up to 30 lbs or more. I have a Persian/Maine Coone mix and his top weight was 28 lbs. If the cat is a breed that is meant to weigh only a certain amount...then you could have a problem. You should check with your vet. He/ she can tell you what breed your cat is...if it is a mix. Then they can go by the weight and breed to see if kitty is to fat.

I have some awesome pics of my Boomer if you are interested. Just email me by clicking on the link on my profile. I would love to share.

It depends on how big his bone structure is. It's not that heavy for a large Maine Coon cat, but could be quite heavy for a petite cat. Do the bone test described in the response above mine.

Being fat is not healthy for him, so if you love him you'll consider a very high quality food for him from a pet store or ordered online... not the Science Diet from the vet or the stuff from the grocery store. I use Natural Balance Venison and Pea and my cats are both in good physical shape at ages 12 and 4.

I used to have a cat that weighed 29 pound and even with a large bone structure, that was quite heavy for a cat. Turned out he had liver and kidney problems and was retaining water. Your cat probably is not sick, but it's worth a physical at the vet with blood work to be sure.

For some reason keeping cats fat has become popular- but it's not healthy for them.

25 lbs?!! Thats a big cat. He can be that weight if it isnt all fat. If he is running around and playing regularly, it might mean thats just the way his breed is. You could try switching his food, but unless you got a diet food, it wont do to much diference. You could also limit how much food he can have. Maybe 1 cup in the morning, afternoon, and night at the most if you think he is so heavy for eating too much. I would reccomend, for his health, to keep this big cat around 15lbs - 20lbs if you can. That is about average for a cats weight.

Happy Mardi Gras Day !

It all depends on the cat. Some have a healthy weight of 10 lbs, others 30lbs.

You need to do a rib test- can you easily feel the bumps of the ribs but not see them? If you really have to press hard to feel the ribs, it is way way too fat.

At his age, if he is fat, you are going to have to worry about him having organ failure (from fat) and diabetes. Giving an insulin shot or pills to a cat every day (and somestimes 3 times a day) is not fun and definately not cheap.

What you can do if he is fat: slowly decrease the amount of food, or switch to a brand with a lower crude fat content (says right on the label of the bag). Sometimes just switching brands will work, othertimes you may have to get a weight loss formula or one for older cats.

25 pounds is wayyyy toooo heavy for a cat. My cat is 9 yrs old, weighed 15 lbs a few months ago and the vet told me he was over-weight and should lose a couple of pounds. Your obese kitty may look cute to you but I promise you that it is not healthy. Obesity kills. You need to ask your vet to devise a diet for your kitty that will allow him to lose weight gradually (too fast is also denagerous). Honestly, your kitty will be happier if he weighed a lot less than 25 lbs.

Obesity in cats can lead to diabetes, heart disease, breathing difficulties, among others.

That's kind of extreme for a cat. May not have to change his food, but I'd feed him a little less than you do now. Weight problems with animals and people may not look like they are causing problems till its too late to really fix them.

I'd play with him more. He won't know he's excising! Couldn't hurt to call up a vet. They may have a special food. Or, they may just tell you about the same thing I am. Either way, its better to be safe than sorry!

For most cats, 25 pounds is grossly obese. Obesity can lead to diabetes in cats. In fact it is fairly common in obese cats. It's not cute for your cat to be fat. It's unhealthy and puts a lot of stress on your cat's body. Do your kitty a favor and cut down on the amount of food you are feeding and switch to a light cat food to help get his weight down. Cats can easily live to be 20 years old, but not if they are unhealthy. To determine if your cat is overweight, feel the sides of his chest. You should be able to easily feel his ribs without pushing through a layer of fat. You should be able to see a slight waist when looking down from above (No barrel shapes!). And his tummy should tuck up instead of flop out when looking at him from the side. Many neutered cats will get a saggy belly, but usually it is mostly skin and not a lot of fat. Obese cats will be rounder and have a lot more padding.

Oh My Goodness, what kind of cat do you have? I would say if you want him to live a LONG and Happy life he needs to loose some weight or you will have alot invested in vet bills.

he is a little over weight due to old age less active and over feeding it.
read on the back of the cat food it tells how much to feed your cat depending on age and active level
