well everyone has different beliefs about gods/goddesses. i am not saying they are not real, some say that all gods and goddesses come from one great power, some say there are many faces to one god. you could also ask "why do christians create the illusion that there is only one powerful god?". it's there beliefs, who knows if they are real or not. It's a belief that comforts them and helps them with their daily lives, it's not wrong and it may not be an illusion.

Actually their gods predate the Greeks, much earlier Indo-European people invented gods, and much the same deities were worshipped by Greeks, Indians, Romans,Celts and Normans, with a few name changes and elaborations of stories involving gods and humans. For example, the dominant sky god was Jupiter, Dyaus Pita, Zeus or Dis Pater all of which are very similar names.
Obviously thousands of years ago, people invented gods to explain things they didn't understand, such as earthquakes (Poseidon was called the earth-shaker - they thought he shook the earth as well as the sea). I don't think the ancient Greek gods are any more daft than the monotheistic religions, in fact they actually make more sense to me, it's just a pity more people can't tell fact from fantasy.

People always had the need to believe in something superior. They thought Gods were responsible for whatever was happening to their moral lives. So, they had Gods to blame for their failures or for everything bad and good in their life. Later they wanted to believe that even those powerful Gods had weaknesses and they were making mistakes like humans.

For the same reason todays religious lunatics believe in the bible, koran etc, they could not explain natural happenings and so turned to stories and supernatural explainations. The trouble is the trash that is written in those novels the bible and the koran is still believed by the vast majority of people today.
