Keep your dog in a crate except for going outside. He has to be let out very frequently. He will not do his business in such a small area as his crate. It seems cruel... at least it did to me. I wanted to be with my dog, but it works and quickly. If you do it for a short time he will learn to go outside and you can then give him more freedom. Also, he will begin to feel that his crate is his home and that it is safe there. Once he is given even total freedom, he will choose sometimesto go in the grate on his own. Just because he likes it!

Make sure the crate is the right size for the dog. Too big and they'll mess in it, too small and too uncomfortable. They should be able to stand and turn around. Most crates come with a partition to shrink the crarte for puppies. Put a mat or some padding in the crate and a few favorite toys. We use a properly prepared marrow bone or a kong ball with a half a biscuit in it. Then put the dog in the crate for short periods of time while you stay there. Extend the times so they get longer and longer. When the dog is comfortable, disappear for short times and lengthen those as well. After each training session give the dog an extra special treat before it comes out of the crate - we use an all meat or fowl cat food in gravy; a spoonful is all you need.

Patience will pay.

scale up the time slowly. My dog is crated for about 9 hours a day and overnight. he is a small dog and is fine with it. He has a crate thats big enough to move around a little in, but is really his safe place. Actually, whenever he is scared (horror movies for example-no joke) he will curl up in the crate. I give him a kong with a good treat in it before work every day, and a regular treat b4 bed.

I do leave him out of the crate when I do errands, I trust him for 3-4 hour blocks of time. I am actually contemplating no longer crating him during the day, but I am not quite sure yet. He uses puppy pads instead of the outside (he's hairless and there is snow here) so I like to be around to pick up the poos!

good luck!

if your question is to crate train or not then my answer is a definate yes!!
Crate training is benificial to you and your dog. Dogs are a decendant of wolves and they are dening creatures. As long as you do not use your crate for punishment the dog will see it as a good thing. use your crate when you are home and when you are not home. never let the dog out of the crate if he is whinning or crying you must have them be quiet and then it is ok to let them out. does this help you? I could go on about crates they really are good for the dog make sure the size is right not to big.

Are you asking how to do it?

I use clicker training and my dogs - AND MY CAT- love crates!

First just sit by the crate, and wait for your dog to walk near it. Click and give him a treat. (Or say "good" and give him a treat.)

Then wait for him to look at the crate, click/treat.

Then wait for him to walk closer to the crate, C/T.

Then wait for him to put one foot in the crate, C/T.

Don't force him in or shut the door- just let him figure it out- it's like playing hotter-colder. It's called shaping.

Eventually he'll put both feet in, then his whole body, etc., but don't shut the door yet. C/T and let him come back out. (Give the treats inside the crate at this point.)

When you first start shutting the door, just move it an inch, then open it and C/T. Then two inches, then 4, etc.

When you first shut it, just shut it for a second then open it, C/T.

Then start building up how long you leave it closed.

Once he's got hte idea you can add a cue... I say, "Go to your room!" My dog will run upstairs happily and get in his crate because it means he gets a treat.

Don't worry about using treats... it's only when they first go inside, and it's GOOD for hte dog- it makes training fun for him. It's like his pay check for being a good dog.

works, but you have to realize the dog is in a box. How long would you like to sit in a box waiting for someone to let you out. Limit your time out while he's at home in a crate.
