There is a great answer by sugarbabe here !
None of the achievements on her list were made by turks. They were made either by mother nature or by nations and people that were living in turkey in the past.
Turks achieved nothing because they came from the steppes without a culture and an alphabet. They took everything from the people they enslaved. Even their cuisine is a copy of their neighboring nations.
Nowhere in her answer she mention the Greeks, the people who created the most of all those she writes.

The question asks "What MADE Turkey famous?" thereby implying a historical perspective. In my opinion, Turkey became famous in the west due to its contradictory blend of exoticism, (perceived) danger, and its accessability from western Europe. Also the fact that it had for centuries been part of a major trade route, ie the silk road. These factors still exist. Turkey is at a crossroads - geographically, historically, culturally and politically.
Turkey is an enigma.

The region comprising modern Turkey has seen the birth of major civilisations including the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. Owing to its strategic location at the intersect of two continents, Turkey's culture is a unique blend of Eastern and Western tradition, often described as a bridge between the two civilisations.
