Most people just leave it on for the day, and then wash it off in the next shower.
Yes, it's appropriate to go anywhere with it, as it is the same as wearing a crucifix necklace or carrying a pocket Bible. You're probably going to get a lot of people who whisper, "Sorry, but you've got something on your face...", but it's a cool way to start a conversation with someone.

I kept them on as long as they stayed on. In fact, I saw it as an interesting opportunity to explain to people what it was all about when they asked why my forehead was smudged.
I think if you explain to any coworker or superior that the smudge is in place for religious reasons, they may back off. Of course, I would consider that special treatment, but hey, people get away with it.
Then again, now that I'm an atheist, I won't be smudging my forehead, but that was my experience as a Catholic years ago.
