Because if you truly love someone then you want what's best for them or what makes them happiest. If they are unhappy being in a relationship with you and aren't really in love with you, as much as it might break your own heart, you have to do what's best for them and let them go and give them a chance to be happy.

The comment is usually mentioned when the relationship is over and one of the parties involved doesn’t want the relationship to end.
It’s basically saying, let it go. Move on. Why would you want to be with someone who doesn’t want to be with you? You can’t force someone to love you or be with you.
Let it go, move on, blahh.. you know, stuff like that.
