NO you can not! Even if he ends up with just an "ok"! The "internal" things always say another story. That is why people should think more! But you should break up with him if you have to!

being honest is usually the best way. tell him you just want to be friends...that you are looking for something more in a mate
some people can deal with this some can't
it is always hard not to hurt someone ... there is no "easy" way
