Get a night light. Then on the way to bed make a major announcement to ALL mosters and other critters lurking in the child's bedroom Proclaim loudly that the lifeform coming down the hallway to the bedroom is the most ferousious, most feared, scariest, deadlies creature of all time and that if they value their lives they will remain hidden in closets and under beds until this creature is up and out the door the next morning...this dreaded creature that stirs fear in the hearts of every closet/underbed monster is? A 4 year old child...

well, first of all hes only 4 yrs old and might overcome those fears as he gets older but you can buy him a night light or tell him that theres nothing that he should be afraid when hes alone in the room. Oh, dont let him see any scary movies before going to sleep.

I like the answers that talk about caterpillars and butterflies and books. If you can find another caterpillar, you could pick it up and show it to her. But as far as carrying her around, etc., I think I'd just put her down and ignore the behaviour. It might just be an attention getting thing now. If she's stuck in a room and no one is paying any attention to her "Help me!" cries, she'll probably stop.

try to figure out if there are toys in there which my be frightening for a young child. sometimes things look scary in the dark. you could try putting some nite lights in the sockets or giving a special teddy or doll for comfort. you could also try going into the room for 2 or 3 Min's with the child to reassure them that they will be safe even after you leave the room
