I've always thought about the Divine being masculine, but that's probably because I tend to identify Krishna as my representation of the Divine. However, I would really think the Divine has both the protective and dominant "masculine" attributes while also displaying the nurturing and caring associated with "feminine" attributes.
God has no gender, God is everything.

From a monotheist perspective: it makes more sense to envision a Goddess than a male God. Creator of life and all that stuff.
From a polytheist perspective: lots of goddesses.
