There are many types so a good very general primer would be found at wikipedia. Not the most reliable but should steer you in the right direction if you're looking for basic practices and texts.

Try www.buddhanet.com

Osho has some great books on Buddhism, I especially liked

"The life and teachings of Buddha"

and

"Zen"

Good luck!

read some of this enlighten, awesome guy
http://www.dzogchen.org/surya/

get these books (read chopra 1st):

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b/002-1467482-5912023?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=seven+laws+chopra&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go

http://www.amazon.com/Awakening-Buddha-Within-Tibetan-Western/dp/0767901576

&

http://www.amazon.com/Awakening-Sacred-Creating-Personal-Spiritual/dp/0767902750/sr=1-3/qid=1171995045/ref=sr_1_3/002-1467482-5912023?ie=UTF8&s=books

These are simple, easy, accessible and mandatory... if you dive into a RELIGIOUS community you will get confused, sidetrack and will get stuck on all the religous distraction which is complicated and usually leads you away from what you came for.

You will be very grateful if you take my suggestion and the books are cheap on amazon $5-$6 used!
