The Iraq war is not a war for our freedom...not directly, anyway. The war was initially begun to remove Saddam Hussein from power and to locate his Weapons of Mass Destruction. Once Saddam was captured and out of power, the focus of the war shifted to the location of the WMDs (which were found, by the way, in the form of 600 TONS of chemical munitions...WMDs are NOT just nukes, you know) and the establishment of democracy in Iraq. The Muslim insurgents and terrorists don't much like the idea of a democratic society in a Muslim country, so they're fighting us over it.
Will it eventually become a war for our freedom? I think it has an excellent possibility. Our Demoncratic congress (and no, I didn't misspell anything...I did it on purpose) has sent a clear message to the insurgents and Al Queda that now is the time to reform and regroup, recruit new members and plan new terror attacks against us...they sent this message in the form of the non-binding resolution the House passed last week. All this did was show weakness to our enemies, who will most certainly exploit it. On the national news this morning the "Today" show broadcast a report that Al Queda is growing in strength in Afghanistan as a direct result of the turmoil in the United States in regards to Bush and the war effort.
So yes, I think it may just become a war for our freedom, because evenutally the terrorists are going to hit us here in the continental United States. And when that happens, if it happens during Bush's term, you can just bet that the same people who are blasting him about the war in Iraq now will be the same ones who will blast him for "not doing anything to prevent" the attack when it comes.

You should ask yourself this- Do I believe a war in Iraq was necessary for the safety and security of my way of life? if no then Do I believe that American troops should by whatever means are available come home safely? You have to be careful at forming your answers-because supporting the actions of troops essentially is supporting war-they don't bake cookies now do they? Thats what they're for, fighting wars. However, an intelligent person realizes that most people in the military don't relish the position they are in. Also, they have very little control about how it has come to this point-and the military doesn't have to let you leave. They are in a cath 22 if they don't support the war. They are not allowed to say anything or do anything about it. Since I was in that position, I know how they feel and I still don't think it was right. I knew that getting rid of Sadaam with force would bring about the infighting. Traditionally muslims are guided by there religion-which isn't that condusive to democracy in the way we practice it. My proof is the battling between not Shi'a and Sunni-but between the Shi'a clerics themselves. There was going to be a role reversal and the Sunni's would be the ones punished for Sadaam's reign. It appears that these people can't forgive and forget. P.S. I don't believe I should support someone I care about if they go to prison for serious crimes. I'm not talking about petty larceny-I'm talking rape, murder etc I would never condone. That person and I would have a biblical reckoning not a thats ok, I know you didn't mean it.

In the 10 years before the US took their "war on terror" to "their turf" i.e. the Middle East, the only terrorist attacks in the US were by white Christian homegrown extremists, yet no-one was living in fear and the Goverment wasn't randomly arresting and locking up without trial members of militias, or members of far-right organisations.
The Baker Commission and the US Congress, along with the UK Government and the UN all agree that the invasion of Iraq has made another attack along the lines of 9/11 MORE LIKELY. Indeed here in the UK we've suffered 2 terrorist attacks as a direct result of our involvement with the illegal invasion of Iraq.
Since 9/11, both the Bush administration and our own Government here in the UK have brought in draconian laws which do little to combat terrorism, but took away hard fought for freedoms, such as the right to privacy, the right to a fair trial, the right NOT to be locked up indefinately without trial. They've also resticted rights to freedom of speech and the right to peaceful protest. If the war in Iraq was ever about freedom, someone forgot to tell Bush and Bliar.
--- Addition ---
Contrary to what some right wing US commentators were saying, large quantities of chemical weapons were NOT found in Iraq. The only chemical weapons found were a small number of battlefield munitions that were over 10 years old and unuseable. Even if they had been viable, they would only have been a threat to soldiers in Iraq. We were told in the run up to the invasion that Iraq had WMDs that could be launched in 45 minutes and were capable of hitting the US and UK bases in Cyprus (remember all that talk of "mushroom clouds"?).
(And now they're trying to get us to support an invasion of Iran, they're telling us that Iraq is so technologically *backwards* that they have to be supplied by Iran with roadside bombs made of a mortar shell, a detonator and an alarm clock wired together. My gran could make one of them - do they really think we're that dumb?)

Haha, that's funny about the magnetic ribbons.
Officially, it's part of the "global war on terrorism", which is defined as being waged so that people can be free from fear (of train bombings, video beheadings, planes crashing in buildings, etc.)
Personally I never saw the connection between 9/11 and Iraq -- but so-called neoconservatives in the Administration managed to convince the President, and sold the all-expenses Iraq vacation package to Congress as well.
Read Woodward's "Bush at War".
So it's not exactly the war we set out on, but it's the one we've got to win. Or at least not lose outright.

Our freedom is not at stake here unless you are talking about the Patriot Act and other governmental regulations that have been imposed on us BECAUSE of the terrorists. But, we all know that Iraq was not involved in 9/11. So, they do not pose a threat to our freedom. Now the Revolutionary War was to protect our freedoms from the British. Huge difference.

Great question. 9-11(excuse for war) and the warS over there were just an excuse to enact the Patriot Acts which take away our freedoms. And so many people fell for it...and continue to support the likes of Dubya. And we are getting LESS free every day....sad to say. The concentration camps are all ready for us.

It's more like safety - secure our country from terror attacks. It happened once it sure as hell can happen again - only the next time the war maybe on our soil- think about that before you make absurd comments about magnetic sales! I SUGGEST YOU HANG AN AMERICAN FLAG OUTSIDE YOUR HOUSE GO TO A VFW & THANK SOME OF OUR FORMER TROOPS FOR THEIR SERVICE TO THIS GREAT COUNTRY & FOR RISKING THEIR LIVES TO PROTECT YOURS!

You've not heard the countries in that region - they are very anti american. if they would have figured out a way to conquer us - we'd be wearing the burkas and stuff.
How can you be sure that the WTC was where they would have stopped? Can you be certain that the enemies overseas would NOT have joined forces (if they hadn't already) in order to try to control the US?

Since we have brought the war on terror to "their" turf, i.e the middle east, there has not been ONE SINGLE terrorist attack on U.S. Soil, your freedom to live life without the fear of another 9/11 has been restored, everyone who watched their children rest their heads at night couldn't help wondering what life would be like without them, or theirs without us. Now U.S. citizens are going about their life normally again. SO, point being this and EVERY war has something to do with your freedom.
You need to broden your aspects of what freedom truly is, and stop taking it for granted.
