I volunteered to fill in for my friend for a few days at her job as a waitress at Ihop. I swear I was friendly and on point but most people rarely left a tip. I know you don't have to but I think it should be done just out of respect.

tips are given when you receive above average service and it's optional at that, not mandatory

I don't understand it either. I mean, most waitresses/waiters (at least where I live), only make 2 something an hour. I try to tip at least 15% if I get pretty descent service. 20% if the service is really good. Many of the women on my husbands side of the family have been waitresses at one time or another, so I know that some of these people really depend on that money to help take care or their families. I think people are just cheap. I don't think they want to have to spend any more money than they "HAVE" to. I have gone to restaurants for lunch with girlfriends before and we have split the check, and I would leave like a $3-$5 tip for my half, and they wouldn't leave any type of tip. It makes me mad and I feel obligated to leave more of a tip to make up for what they didn't leave.

I love IHOP and when I go there I always leave a tip. Unless the service is terrible, and even then I feel a little bit guilty. I have been in situations when I only have enough for the food and cant give a tip. Maybe thats what happened to some, the rest are just rude.

Tipping should always be done. Waiters and Waitress' are taxed on the total amount of sales that they have made. There fore, alot of times, if you don't tip them, they actually paid to wait on you. Alot of people also don't realize that a wait staff, is only paid 2 to 3 dollars an hour because they are supposed to make up the difference in tips. With cheap people out there, sometimes its hard. At the same time, it can also be very rewarding monetarily if you are an alert, kind and considerate waitress. Sometimes, you just have to shake it off when you don't get tipped.

In reference to an above answer - I don't care what kind of a restaurant it is, if a waiter or waitress serves you - YOU SHOULD TIP!!! If you can't afford a tip - than get the hell out and eat at McDonalds or Burger King.

You may think you gave friendly service but the person or people you served thought otherwise.

I tip every time, regarless of service. I base my tip on how well the waiter or waitress handled my visit. Did they check on us regularly? Did my requests for refills come in a timely manner or not at all? Was my order accurate? If all of the above is positive & correct, then I at least leave a $2 tip. I tip more for waitstaff who are more on the ball, bringing me refills when my glass is almost empty or asking me for one at 1/2 empty, bringing extra napkins without being asked, removing unused condiments from the table, etc. Mostly, I tip anywhere from 5%-20%, more if the bill is higher or I had excellent service.

I also think that tipping should be mandatory at restaurants. I'm talking places like Denny's, IHOP, TGIFriday's, Applebee's, Black Angus, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, etc. Not fast food like McDonald's, Burger King, Carl's Jr, Wendy's, etc. If restaurants were putting up signs that state that a 5% tip is mandatory, then more people would be leaving them. That's not a big tip, but every little bit helps.

1. A lot of people don't think about how hard it would be to be a waitress and think they get paid enough from their employer.

2. Some people are barely affording to eat there much less to tip their server.

3. Some people were never taught when and/or how to tip. Some people may feel embarassed about trying to figure out the rules of tipping.

(I always tip unless the service was terrible!)

Some people are just cheap and don't realize that the wait staff in most restaurants (except in California) make way less than minimum wage. Those of us that have worked food service before know how tough it is to make a living working in a job where you get tips.

Some people are cheap, some people are just strapped for money, or maybe they were not satisfied with something. I usually tip but there has been a few times I have left no tip because I was not happy with service due to rudeness, slow service, or the food. It maybe not have been you they were not happy with but it did reflect back onto you in their eyes. There are also some people who just dont find it right.

Tips are to be EARNED. You cannot give lousy service and still expect a tip. If you give good service and are nice and friendly and accommodating, you should expect a proper tip. People typically do not tip if they:

Are broke
Didn't like the service
Are just plain cheapskates

I totally agree with you. In my opinion, it's totally rude not to leave a tip unless you recieve *horrible* service. And to be perfectly honest with you, I would still feel bad not leaving one!

I was always taught that leaving a tip was a near mandatory part of eating at a nicer restaurant... and if you don't want to leave one, eat FAST FOOD!

1). They might not have the money right then to tip.
2). They are stingy
3). They think that you make a lot of money
4). Someone told them not to tip
Thats' all i can think of, I always tip because i would want people to tip me for my excellent service!!! :)
