I volunteered to fill in for my friend for a few days at her job as a waitress at Ihop. I swear I was friendly and on point but most people rarely left a tip. I know you don't have to but I think it should be done just out of respect.

One thing you did not tell us is where is this iHop located..
Certain areas don't tip as well as others, as do those that do not have a regular clientel such as off an interstate highway.

I tip when service is good. Friendliness is a component of overall service, however, if food delivery is slow, not cooked well, slow refills, and the biggie...slow on the inital acknowlegement. These all drag down tippage big time!

Also one has to remember, that tipping is completely voluntary.
Does the iHop take credit cards? Many times now people leave the tip on the card when they check out, maybe it's not getting back to you.

Some people are just cheap. I tip based on 2 factors: the service & the quality of the meal. I'll tip up to 25% for excellence on both counts, usually around 20% if basically good. 15% if just average. 5-10% if below average. Nothing if absolutely rude, poor service, bad food, etc. I've only encountered the latter a few times & I've been on the planet for awhile.

If you're too persistent and keep bugging the customers, it gets kind of annoying and so for that my boyfriend and I both don't tip. There's a line between being a nice waitress and being a pain of a waitress.

Unfortunately honey, many people are STILL closet racists and they most likely didn't tip you because you're black. Did you fill in for a waitress who was of another persuasion? If so, ask her what her usual rate was compared to yours and you'll see the diff.

If the server is polite and obviously trying to do a good job, I tip. Some people are just rude; others are ignorant. Obviously, the non-tippers have never worked for tips before.

you are right some people are just rude, but tips are not always just given for the waitress' performance, somepeople weight the way the food was prepaired and how it tastes, which is not your fault.

because their rude.

Its out of respect, even the worst service deserves some sort of tip.

Ive given bad tips for bad service and good tips for good service, its just something you do.

People are just, well................people.
