I personally do not see it being selfish to host your own engagement party especially today when most couples pay for their wedding themselves but from searching the web it is bad etiquette to host your own party.
See below:
Q: Who should host the engagement party?
A: Most engagement parties are hosted by the parents of the bride as a form of announcing the engagement of their daughter. However, as times change more and more parents of the groom or siblings or friends are hosting engagement parties. As a rule of thumb, the brides parents would be the first to offer such an event, but if they don't it would be alright to accept the offer from someone else for a party. The bride and groom should never, however, request an engagement party of anyone.

Go ahead and throw yourselves a party! Getting engaged is a time for celebration! After all, the whole reason for the party is to get the families together to meet each other. You wouldn't want the families to meet too close to the big day because there's enough stress that goes along with planning the wedding, you wouldn't want to add to it. If you have the money, go for it!

An engagement social gathering isn't a primary journey while a bridal bathe is. The engagement social gathering is purely that...to have fun the engagement. commonly a marriage date would possibly no longer have been set by utilizing then and you at the instant are not registered. it is in basic terms a thank you to announce the engagement. definite, the groom is going to the engagement social gathering to boot. some human beings deliver presents in spite of the actual incontrovertible fact that i hit upon it annoying whilst human beings anticipate a modern throughout the time of their engagement social gathering...I recommend an engagement present, bridal bathe present, AND a marriage present...gas is purely too costly for that nonsense LOL we are doing an engagement social gathering and can have it catered. We desperate to do a small wedding ceremony and this may be an danger for a number of human beings that isn't invited to the marriage to share in our social gathering.

It is very much NOT selfish.

In fact, many couples are throwing the parties themselves now days because they are taking on more of the responsibilities of the wedding. Just make sure you are polite and don't tell the parents that they were supposed to offer.

For what purpose do you need to have such a party. You will need all your money to pay for the wedding.
