I have my elderly grandfather here, John. He is very ill and has been told he may not see the end of March. He served in the Navy throughout WW2 and afterwards, and is the last of his wartime friends left alive. He says he saw the ocean claim many lives, German, American and British, and hopes that he will be with them all again before long.

He is sad as he thinks now our generation has forgotten WW2, and all who fought on both sides; he has long since forgotten those who killed his friends, his friends who killed enemy sailors, and the ships that sent him in to the waves more than once. So please can you post here your thanks to our veterans, of all sides or all conflicts, so I can show him we still remember. Please also add where you are from- he wants to hear from everyone.

He finally asks that you remember the living and dead of your nation and it's allies, but don't forget the old enemies- they were just young lads too.

Thank you so much, from me and Grandfather John!

Tell your grandfather that we have not all forgotten the 2nd world war - my grandfather too fought in this war and he too lost many good friends. I am thankful every day for what all our veterans did for us. We are extremely grateful. May grandfather John find peace and happiness when he leaves this world and be at peace on the other side. Thank you and god bless from Cardiff, UK

Dear friends,
I am from Arizona.
My grandfather served in WWII as a Navy Seabee on Guam and other small islands near Japan. He was a scout and a tank mechanic.

To this day, my grandfather will not talk about friends he lost or men he killed, but he does talk about his pet koala "that was a nasty *****". He tells us stories of being in palm trees listening to Japanese troops standing directly under him, and their dogs barking up at him. He quieted the dogs by dropping deadly scorpions on them that hid in the palm trees. He said he learned Japanese real quick! Ha ha.

I am so proud of my grandfather and those of his generation. You taught us that hard work and sacrifice is the way to a happy life. You taught us that family is everything. You taught us that America can come together and be one. Thank you for your service to our country and for your contributions to the worlds' society.

I hope that your life has been filled with many blessings and that you are surrounded by loving family. You must be, to have a wonderful grandson posting this for you! Thank you again.

All my best...
-Anjie B.

blessings to you both. i live in america. i never met my grandfather, who died in that war. now as a jewish convert, i feel connected to him instead of just sad like i did as a child, and i am more grateful to him and all the other soldiers than i can ever say. my children know too. i have a six year old son who loves captain america comics because he fights the nazis along side american soldiers. he said once that my grandad and his uncle bob, and all those soldiers, are superheroes too. i think he is very wise.

as far as enemies, there is a midrash that we tell at passover, about how the angels laughed when they saw what happened to the egyptians at the reed sea, and god becomes angry, asking "were those not my children too?"

2 things i wish for your grandfather: that his passing is peaceful, and that your memory is long.

My grandfather served as a Paratrooper in the British Army during WW2, and later in Palestine, alongside a lot of his own brothers.

Wish he was still here.

WW2 was one of saddest happenings in the history of mankind.Your poor grandfather was an unfortunate player of this drama;just for a few chips and hallow applauses. Why is he clamouring for a few more?He should now get ready for accountability of how he used the gift of life,.I think he should be made to get out of WW2 romance?

Thank you for your service from the bottom of my heart. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten. My father-in-law also served in WW2. He passed away about a year ago and the memory of the solders standing by, the crack of their rifles and Old Glory draping the casket at his funeral is something that I will never forget. There were tears in everyones eyes. God bless you sir.
