It's probably not a good idea *right now* if your husband isn't on the same page as you. I'm in the same situation - just be patient and when the time is right, talk with him openly and shove some really cute pictures of the puppy breed you want to get and wait until his icy heart melts a little...and if that doesn't work, use your womanly gifts to persuade him (wink, wink)...

Talk to him, ask him why he doesn't want one. My mother wanted one as well, & my father didn't. Most likely your husband is scared that the dog won't be taken care of. He doesn't want more responsibility. If you try to tell him that you will take care of the dog & it will not cause any problems, maybe he will agree. If that doesn't work, maybe your husband just doesn't like dogs! In that case, try to compromise on another pet (maybe a cat?) Good luck.

My boyfriend did not want any dogs but I went ahead and got two puppies anyways. He loves them and plays with them when he feels like it but I don't ask him to help with any of the training, vet bills etc. So I you want the dogs and he doesn't just be prepared to assume full responsability and care.

If he gets his hands on one, he might not be able to resist it. It does need to be something you are both on the same page about, so it wouldn't be fair to just bring one home, though. Maybe if you got him over to a friends house who just happened to have a litter and he started playing with them I'll bet he would be hooked. You'd have to set it up right though, or it would look like a set up.

You should respect his decision but ask him to be open to it in the future. A dog is a lot of work and you will need his help probably. I also wanted a puppy and my boyfriend didnt but he finally agreed after 2 years!! But im glad I waited for him to be onboard with it because its a lot of work and I would find it very difficult to care for her without his help. The sleepless nights and housebreaking were very difficult.

Not knowing your husband, I really don't know. But a fried of mine talked about how her husband was once a strictly non-cat person- until someone put a kitten in his lap. If you know someone with puppies, you could try a similar tactic.

Best thing is to expose him to puppies/dogs. Without being pushy, of course. You have to be subtle. You never know, he just might take a liking to one and surprise you. I wouldn't be whiny about it, though, that might just irritate him. I'm not saying you are, but a lot of wives can be. :-) Good luck!

Don't try right now. The first time you have to find a 'puppy sitter', it will be thrown right back in your face. Be patient and try again at a later date.

Tell him that he doesn't need to do a thing.
That you will competely take care of it and
that you are completely responsible for anything
it does (like pee on the floor or eat his shoes).
If you aren't willing to wholly take on its responsibility
then you probably shouldn't get one anyways.

It sound as if he is selfish in this regard. What harm could it do? They tend to make a family happier no downside unless it is a yapper.
