I once heard that ever time you flush your toilet you flush something like 14 liters of water (that number could be wrong, but I know that it's a ridiculous amount). So, wanting to be as environmentally friendly as possible, in my own home, I've limited the amout of times I flush. ex: yellow I'd let it mellow and brown I'd flush it down. But there has to be a better and more sanitary way. Any suggestions?
Obviously wasting 14 liters for 500 mL of urine is terrible. Perhaps I should get myself a urinal.

to make sure you aren't wasting water, add 5 drops of food coloring in the cistern. If you see food coloring in the toilet bowl after 2-5 minutes (to make sure) then you have a leakage. Tighten the part the flush lever arm!

we've got a 1.6 liter TOTO toilet. it flushes faster and fills back up faster, uses WAY less water. the last house i lived in was completely off the grid and used composting toilets...for you, i think you're on the right track. if you can replace the toilet, do so. if not, try to conserve water other places too. turn down your hot water thermostat, don't let it run unnecessarily, reuse water when possible, put a brick in your tank to keep it from filling all the way...

Use a brick in the cistern - the cistern will take less water to fill, therefore you use less water every time you flush. You may have to flush twice sometimes though!

Use rain water to flush the toilet, that's what many people do at their cottages

There are dual flush and low flow toilet models available. Perhaps it would be better if you ever have guests.
