Well it completely depends on the breed of dog you want. Of course i always recomend adopting from a rescue, or a shelter. The benefits farely outweigh the negatives. Usually you get a dog, young ,old, puppy. Housebroken, crate trained, fixed, up to date on vaccinations, dewormed. And for a cheaper price. You also get the satifaction of saving a life.

You have to be careful when looking into a breeder. Here is a general list of things to know about breeders.

1. Always look around the kennel, see if the dogs are interacting, how they look, how they act, smell.

2. Ask to see the parents, not just the puppies.

3. Ask to see there health records. All good breeders have there dogs tested and hip scored, before even considering breeding.

4. It's a good idea to notice the amount of dogs. Good breeder only have a litter at a time, they know better and everything is always planned.

5. Along those same lines, avoid breeder who breed multiple breeds of dogs.

Make sure you know what kind of dog you want, what kind of dog fits your life style. "small dogs" is a ver general statement. A Rat Terrier is way different then a Toy Poodle. Here are some places you can look at breeds and find breeders. Good Luck, and keep the resuce part in mind!

Try akc.org and look for breeds. Then go to the parent club and get their breeder referral. There are lots of breeds of dogs so you may want to do research on the dogs to decide which is best for you. All small dogs are not created equal.

Go to akc.org and to the breeder referral section. This will give you links to parent clubs of any breeds you may be interested. The parent clubs will have breeders listed for your area.
