I shouldn't associate with a person who is extremely religious. Why is that?

~~~AEC ,,, Because they tend to have extreme cases of a "Superiority Complex" far and above the average Self-Righteousness.
Not knowing what the context was, I'm not sure why were told that. The may be alluding to the fact the Christianity really isn't about religion (thought many make it seem as if it is). For them to ask you "not associate with someone" sounds a little extreme though....
Back to my original point; Christianity is different from other beliefs in that it is not about religion. Rather, it is about what God has already done for us in Jesus Christ. In the Christian faith, it is recognized that religion doesn't make anyone "right with God"...only Jesus can do that. Religion is simply a response to what God has done for us.
Therefore, "good works" come naturally...as a response from our faith. Unfortunately, some people seem to forget that and get hung up on "rules & requirements". The New Testament talks about those who wish to be "religious" by simply saying:
"pure religion is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world." (James 1:27).
Some people get sooo religious they start to loose their mind. I have a friend who's mother became so engulfed in Christianity that the husband had to divorce her. She was sending all of their money to religious groups, and completely neglecting the family. All she would talk about was Jesus 24/7. It was pretty disturbing to spend time with her. Her daughter is currently in prison...but instead of trying to help her daughter, she is wandering the country scrounging up more money to send to those Christian TV Channels.
Interestingly enough, the husband that divorced her is a Preacher.
some 'christians' get so into a 'religion' that they lose site of Jesus and the relationship they need to keep with Him...
forget what any certain 'church' may say... or the religious fanatics who spew fire, brimstone and condemnation...
just be careful what you listen to and compare it to the Word of God and make sure it lines up. If you know the Truth, you can be around most anyone and not be turned from a true relationship with Jesus
Coz they're gonna try to convert you. Eventually, you might clash on that matter. Any person actively practicing his religion is okay so long as he is tolerant and understanding of others. A lot, but not all, of extremely religious people have the tendency to try to convert others to their religion. Maybe that's why he told you that.
Probably because they believe that someone who is extremely religious must be an extremist (evangelical or fundamentalist) and that they are wrong in their extremism. It's as bad as someone saying you shouldn't associate with an atheist if you're Christian.
Just let it go... I associate with whomever I wish as long as they don't hurt me and I can trust them. Religion doesn't matter.
Because the Christian has a relationship with the Lord Jesus....Jesus had problems with the religious ones of His time who were the Pharisees.....I see people who hold onto mans rituals religiously as the religious of OUR time......develop a relationship with Jesus...get away from rituals.
They are probably afraid that they will turn you off with their zeal and make it so that you never have an open-enough mind to give it a fair chance. If you are angry/offended, you won't listen to another point of view. This Christian just wants to make sure you have a fair chance at having what they have that they think is great in their life without you being beaten over the head with it.
It would be wiser to develop a relationship with God rather than an religious person who may be all talk, but no apparent change in their lives from being so religious.
Because it is dangerous to associate with fanatics, remember Jones town, wacko TeX, and they all called them selves Christians, if someone comes on to you holier than thow back right off, and tell them to have a nice day.
I don't know, how is your attitude? If you are the kind of person who will only associate with Christians if you can mock and degrade their religion, then I would tell you not talk to them because no one likes to be insulted. If you are the kind of person who treats everyone, regardless of faith/creed/gender/what have you, then I don't know why they would say that.
How about telling us what the conversation was?
