My doctor gave me 20 mg of adderall to take in the morning. Well around 2:00 it wears off and I am still at work. I have some 10mg pills left over from a previous prescription. Would it be okay to break one of the 10mg in half and take it? Is anyone else on adderall - what is your dosage per day?

By the way - I have been noticing that I dont get the same effects recently as I was when I first started taking it. I have been on it 1 1/2 months.

This is the big problem with Adderall.

When you first begin to take it, the effects of the amphetamine/d-amphetamine are "new feelings" to your system. The "pep" you get from them, the heightened awareness/alertness, the "speeding up" of the body/mental processes - they are all new to your system.

But, the mind and body are extraordinary things. What happens is, your body adapts itself to function more normally while you are on the medication. The longer you are on it, the more your body accepts it as "the norm". This is why you are able to consciously discern when it is in effect and is not in effect - because when you aren't "feeling it", your body is telling you something's not normal. The body will then adjust itself accordingly once it is completely metabolized, but will still leave you with the unexplainable feeling of discomfort (which is the result of "coming down" to your natural level).

I am currently prescribed to Adderall XR, and have been for quite some time now. Right now, I am 120 lbs and take a 30mg in the mornings. My body has a ... well, abnormally high tolerance to amphetamines, and I was at one time taking 30 in the morning and 30 at noon. That was weaned down to 20 + 20. Now it is at one 30mg per day.

It's not wise to continuously raise the dosage level, because you will naturally accomodate the amphetamine after a while. You may ask your psych. if you could take a 20 in the morning and a 20 at noon, that seemed to work well for me for awhile.
But remember this: once you expose yourself to stronger effects of the amphetamine, its very difficult to settle for any less. So if you decide to bump it up a bit, be cautious. An alternative to 20+20 may be to take a single 30mg in the morning.

However...

Based on the fact that you are able to "break up" your last prescription pills, I am drawing the conclusion that you are - or were - taking Adderall IR (immediate release).

If you are currently on XR, taking an IR is going to completely blow your ability to concentrate. Because once the IR is metabolized, the little "kick" it may give you is going to leave you with a stronger "come down" effect. Meaning, you will be even more conscious of the fact that you aren't "feeling it".

If you are still on IR, I suggest you talk to your psych. about XR (extended release). This is a much more equipped pill for work/school because of the rate at which it releases the amphetamines to be metabolized. It will last you alot longer during the day.

Anyways, I've been on Adderall for a long time. It'll take a bit of time to determine your ideal dosage.

Hope this helped you some :)

I take Adderall 20mg XR each morning, around 8 am. On days when I need to study, or have more to do than usual, I take adderall 10mg in the afternoon around 3 pm, in addition to the 20mg in the morning. My doctor recommended after I told him that I was having the same problem that you are having. However, you should not take the 10mg without contacting your doctor first. I also know what you are talking about with the medicine not being as effective. I think that you are just becoming more accustom to the effects of the medicine. That is what it was in my case, but you should still talk to your doctor about it!

You need to get the adderall XR (stands for extended release) meaning that it is formulated to dissolve slowly and release the drug over time. But if that's what you're taking right now, that just means that your body has developed a tolerance for the drug and you need to move on to the 25 mg, be sure to consult a physician before you do that though.
i'm currently taking the 20mg XR, i usually take it in the morning and it lasts me until about midnight or so.

Yes it is okay to take more but here lies the problem. If you arent getting the same effects as before its because your body is getting accustomed to it. If you start taking some at 2 pm your body will become more accustomed to it and you will then need even more to have the same effect, kind of a vicious cycle.
