An atheist knows there is no god, an agnostic isn't so sure.

An atheist believes there is no God. Like it has been mentioned, nobody in the world can be sure in the existence of God or not because spirituality does not require evidence, so hte most fundamental choice is what one beleives to be true. An atheist beleives that there is no God.

An agnostic recognises the inability for anyone to be sure on the existence of God, and decides since they cannot be sure, they are undecided. Until they can choose to believe one way or the other or they stay undecided doesn't really matter. Some agnostics stay that way their whole lives, and it isn't merely indecision. Others come to a conclusion in some form.

As others have said, an atheist believes there is no God and an agnostic either states that they don't know or, more decisively, that they genuinely believe NOBODY knows. There seems to be an assumption out there that agnostics somehow "sit on the fence" but this is by no means always the case. As an agnostic myself, I have to say I thoroughly resent the way agnosticism is labelled as a "weak" form of atheism (see link below). The macho posturing of some atheists kind of pi**es me off too (eg: "atheists have balls").

Personally, I'd say the lack of evidence leads me to *strongly suspect* there isn't a God. However, I also believe that lack of proof doesn't necessarily render something "untrue" (merely *unproven*) and that there is still much out there to be discovered (again, I'm not sure God is one of them but the principle still applies).

As an Agnostic I question the knowledge that Atheists and Theists are so sure is proof of the existence or not of a God!
I'm prepared to listen to both sides of the argument but as yet have heard nothing to make me decide either way!
Agnostics have no belief! Atheist and Theist do!

As others have already said an atheist does not believe a god (or gods) exist whereas an agnostic is undecided.
Or being cynical an atheist states where they stand whilst an agnostic sits on the fence.

An atheist has a belief that there is no God. That belief resembles religion in many ways, being a firm belief without evidence.
An agnostic has no knowledge or belief about God, and feels no need to acquire such believes, as belief for or against there being a God is based on insufficient evidence. Agnostics require more evidence than atheists, or religious people.

An atheist believes in no gods or demons. An agnostic feels there is a higher being, but there is no scientific proof.

A-theist : Literally "against God/Gods"

A-gnostic : Literally against 'knowledge', but more usually interpreted as meaning "undecided".

In my experience people who have sought some kind of understanding through religion and fail to find anything convincing or substantial in any of the existing belief systems end up taking the agnostic, or open to convincing 'proof' or evidence of verity.

Those who have, either by personal experience, or by observation, become convinced that the religious, and sometimes even the 'spiritual', aspect of our human experience is entirely bogus, would generally adopt the atheist label. I have also found that some of those who describe themselves as atheist often have quite a bit of anger attached to this position, I repeat, some of.
