If you know these people are poor and you can spare them whatever, just be nice. It will come back to you somehow.

If you want them to stop banging on the door all the time, you can just post a sign on the door, saying..."No visitors please, baby sleeping" or whatever reason could be applied to your situation. It could be needing study time, stay away: FLU in progress, bad mood alert, etc. Whatever.

You could start asking them to borrow things, maybe a small dose of their own medicine, or to assert that you don't give away your things away free. (borrowing consumable items is not borrowing, it is giving, they can't return it.) At the very least you can get the situation to benefit you somehow, instead of it being one sided, and send the message that sometimes you expect them to return the favor.

You can also ask to borrow something pricey, like their car, ask if they can spare a large cut of meat or 50 dollars, borrow the lawn mower or big tool, or whatever. They might get the idea that this borrowing thing isn't such a good idea but they will have no one to blame but themselves for setting that neighborly tone of hassling you for things. You can even emphasize this when you ask: "Hey, I know it is a pretty big deal but I know we are really comfortable with asking each other for things...do you happen to have....(insert whopper request here)"

You could start mentioning that you saw the item they need on sale somewhere, or when the best time to pick up their own. "Hey, back to school sales have glue at really good prices, so when July rolls around, make sure to snag some!"

I'm kind of in the same position, I love my neighbor dearly. He is like family, he did my mother's FUNERAL as a minister in his church. But he is somewhat irresponsible with and forgetful about picking up his own misc stuff...his big one is cans of soda pop..."you got anything to drink over there?" ahhahha... So he comes to ask for things too. I just chalk it up. I borrow from him too, sometimes, and we have done several barters for furniture. Our relationship is more give and take, but not always with THINGS. He showed me how to make a repair on my car? He was there when my mom died, he prays for me, he looked in on my mom frequently and visited her in the hospital, he brings in my mail, etc. So he returns my things with kindness and gestures that are free, in many ways priceless.

One time I asked another neighbor for some cornmeal for a recipe, I could have sworn I had some and was stuck in the middle of mixing it up. She gave me the cornmeal and I returned it with some of the finished product I had made. That, to me, is gracious borrowing.

So I guess what I'm saying is, make sure you're not overlooking something that your neighbor does for you. Maybe for some reason, they think you owe them a few random favors here and there.

As long as they return it the same day, I have no problem with helping someone. I don't like it when they forget to return it. If it bothers you so much, why don't you just tell them you are all out of what they want. They will get the hint after 2 or 3 times.

I used to have neighbors exactly like that. Lucky for me, they eventually moved. My only advice is to not make them hate you, but whenever they ask for something, tell them you're out of it. Even if it's just flour, tell them you're out and you haven't gone out to the store to get more yet. Soon enough, they'll quit being so co-dependent on you. Good luck!!!

If all else fails, play loud music (and I mean SERIOUSLY loud) as often and as loud as you can. That should make them hate your guts in no time!

you don't really want them to hate you do you? you can stop the borrowing by simply saying you don't have it on hand. after a while they get the hint and no hate is involved.

Whatever they ask for, you are out of it or lent it to someone else. Or you can be honest and say you are not comfortable lending out things - if they hate you after this it is their problem.

There is no reason you have to have people hate you.

Don't answer the door!

Seriously, just say no. Or start doing the same thing to them to see how they like it.

Good luck!

Say no.
