Hi Folks,
It seems to be Shrove Tuesday - pancake day.
Two questions, I suppose.
I shall soon be bunging the usual mixture of plain flour, egg, milk & melted butter together, duly panned, then rasberry jam & lemon juice, and a sprinkling of caster suger.
Highly ordinary, I suppose.
Any nice different ideas out there ?
2nd being - why is Shrove connected with pancakes ?
I'm sure that there is a goodly reason, but I can't put my finger on it.
Happy pancake making !
Bob.

Shrove Tuesday is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which is the first day of Lent. It's a day of penitence, to clean the soul, and a day of celebration as the last chance to feast before Lent begins. But there's more to Shrove Tuesday than pigging out on pancakes or taking part in a public pancake race. The pancakes themselves are part of an ancient custom with deeply religious roots.
Penitence
Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of shriving that Christians used to undergo in the past. In shriving, a person confesses their sins and receives absolution for them. When a person receives absolution for their sins, they are forgiven for them and released from the guilt and pain that they have caused them. In the Catholic or Orthodox context, the absolution is pronounced by a priest. This tradition is very old. Over 1000 years ago a monk wrote in the Anglo-Saxon Ecclesiastical Institutes:
In the week immediately before Lent everyone shall go to his confessor and confess his deeds and the confessor shall so shrive him.

I fill regular sweet pancakes with cherry's in syrup, then add marshmallows, fold them over and stick in the microwave for 30 seconds, the marshmallows melt and taste nice.
I don't know excatly what you are asking with the second question, but Shrove tuesday was always told to me at school as being the day people used to use up all the bits from the cupboard they wouldn't be eating during lent. Not sure if that is true though.

I don't think there is a reason it is connected solely with pancakes, but it is a way to get rid of certain foods that need to be cleared out of the house for some religions. This is in preparation for Lent and after Easter the foods can be brought back into the house.
By using the ingredients to make foods, they can be eaten on this Tuesday instead of just being thrown out.

Yes, spinach with stilton cheese sauce. Cook pancakes and microwave some chopped frozen spinach and drain it. Add some fresh cream to the spinach (not too much) and mix. Put filling in pancake and fold. Make some sauce with the stilton and pour over the pancake. They don`t sound very appetizing but they`re LOVERLY!

I use banana milk shake instead of just normal milk. Then I fry a sliced banana in a little butter and sugar ( or you can by a toffee sauce mix to cook the bananas in). I then slice the pancake into stripes and put the fried banana on top and then a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. It's simply heaven ( not to kind to your waistline though).
You can also do it with strawberry milk shake and fried strawberries or chocolate milk shake with chocolate sauce but my favourite is the banana. YUMMY!!!
