If you're referring to a locking jaw, this is a common myth spread about pit bulls. No dog can lock their jaws. Many other fearsome myths have spread about pit bulls, most of which are just as worthless.

Now, lockjaw is also a common name for tetanus where in the more advanced stages, the jaws become locked along with the other muscles in the body. Once the animal has reached this point most will die and the only treatment is supportive care.

There is no such thing as lockjaw. Some breeds have stronger jaws than others because of the way they are built. Some breeds are more likely to bite and hold on than other breeds because of their genetic temperament and how this has been influenced by the environment the animal has grown up in/lives in (eg. dogs encouraged to bite). It is likely that your Dobermann could hold onto an item just as long and strong as a Staffy but does not have the same drive to do so. Put simply, your Dobermann does not find it as rewarding as the Staffy does.

Reading is one thing but experience speaks louder than words. Their muscles are so strong that a break stick is required to unlock the jaw.

There is a decease that is called lock jaw but that is tetanus a completely different thing.

But I have watched Pits fighting and the owners haveing to go into the pit and break a jaw hold.

I know... tell that to the ignorants. All the people that constantly say pittys have lock jaws when they do not. Its called 1500 lbs of bite pressure and stubborn tenacity.. not a jaw that locks.

Yes, this is true. It's not the fact that they "can't" let go, it's that they "won't". They just have a really powerful jaw and under the wrong situations (such as an attack) it can be dangerous.

Lockjaw is a disease. If an animal or person has lockjaw, they should get surgery.
