I am in the process of having my root canal done again. I went to dentist yesterday and he took the old root canal treatment out and put a temp filling on the tooth till i go back and get the root canal done again. However pieces keep coming off the temp filling when i eat even if i dont eat on the side with the temp filling. Is this normal? Its also still hurting when i eat should this stop in a couple of days?

A temp filling is just that temporary its not made to last so it is quiet normal for bits to break off but if it gets uncomfortable for you or you really begin to worry then go to your dentist its just a matter of putting a new 1 in, although if ur next appointment is within the next couple of days(up to a week) then id just leave it its going to be cleaned out again anyway. as u no root fillings are a long lasting proceedure. for the pain side of things it is normal to have some discomfort after the start of root treatment its just because of whats happening to you tooth there are files and other instruments going in and out of ur tooth it will be unplesant especially around the bone area of the tooth, but if the pain doesnt go away in 2 days or so GO BACK TO THE DENTIST as it mite turn out that theres inflamation inside the tooth (Which again is normal for some people so please dont panic) but its best to go back and u may need antibiotics.
im not a dentist but im a dental nurse and that is my professional opinion i just want to give a little advise that we give our patients and i hope it helps.

most dentists use temporary materials for this kind of treatment. It is ok for pieces of filling to flake off. The canals are deep inside the tooth and protected well. Usually dentist puts special medication inside the canal, a bit of cotton and only than a filling.

as for the pain, it depends on the condition of the tooth before root canal. If you had infection that went into the bone you have to give your tooth time to heal. It should start to feel better and better with every day, but it does take time.

Call your dentist and see about having the temporary filling redone. Then eat on the other side of your mouth until the root canal is completed.

Yes it can be normal for temporary fillings to fall out, hence the word "temporary"!
All you need to do is see your dentist and he/she should be able to replace it within seconds.
As for the after pain, this is a common side affect to RCT'S
normal pain killers should sort the pain out, if the pain is realy bad contact the dentist who may prescribe you a course of antibiotics.
