I've got a lower perch and other places for him to be. But, everytime I leave the room he ends up back on top of his cage. I tried putting a sheet on the top to make it a little harder to perch but he still wants to be up there. he is very young and isn't displaying a dominant attitude when he is up there. But, I want to try and nip it in the bud before he gets older. How can I discourage him from going up there?

its hard, my Greenwing climbs to the top of her cage every time I open the door. Luckily she steps up easily when I ask. Try getting a seperate play perch that you can put him on away from his cage when he is out instead of letting him play on the cage.

Birds like to be high. Being high does NOT make them dominant, despite some old-school trainers who claim it. The problem with them being high is simply that they can avoid doing things they don't want to do when they are up there. You can counter act this by learning to train him using clicker training or other positive reinforcement types of training.

If you don't want him on top of the cage, close the cage door when he is unattended. Get him a play stand for when he is outside of the cage.

if he isn't showing any signs of aggressive behavior, than its ok for him to be on top of his cage.

now, if he does start, there is a way to nip its butt... placing him on the floor and turning your back.

also, just make sure he knows his step command fully well!!!

and congrats on taking care of your baby
