I own a 2000 Jeep Wrangler Sahara and I love it!!! The ride is a bit bumpy and rough at times, but that's the joy of having a Wrangler. Also, maintenance is basic tune-up, oil change, or whatever needs repairing or replacing. As for gas mileage, you could compare it to a truck, not too good in city, but fair on highway. It is your choice to make while buying a Wrangler. The X is the standard, Sport is next up with a little more added, Sahara is more equipped, and the Rubicon is the next step up from the Sahara.
LOADS OF FUN!!!
(LOL @ Ted ↓)

I have had several Jeeps from different years so maybe I can help. The CJ's are stiff spring suspension and ride rough, with 12 -20mpg depending on engine and are tough as nails. The 87 to 95 models are a much softer spring suspension that get around 16-24mpg depending on engine. The 87-91 models had alot of engine problems and all are known to have a weak 5-speed transmissions in them. The 95 I had lost 5th gear several times but other than that it was very reliable. The 97- present are soft coil spring suspension and are some of the best Jeeps made. They are very reliable and have excellent 6-cylinder engines. The fuel mileage is around 15-24 depending on engine. I hope this helps you decide but any way you can't go wrong with a Jeep!

Where do you live? Are you willing to come get it. I have several Jeep CJ's for sale. After all the CJ is better than the Wrangler. Made of steel and not plastic.
When the Wrangler came out in 1987 the YJ meant "Yuppie Jeep"
That thing was and still is a joke. Jeep had a massive brain fart on that one. But, when the TJ came out, things got better, a little. But even now the Wranglers are still trying to get back to the CJ roots.
Let us know what you want, CJ 5, CJ 7, or even the elusive CJ 8.
My CJ is your Wranglers Daddy!

I recommend either a TJ (97-06 model years, round headlights) or a JK (brand-spankin' new design, 2007). The TJ's have an inline 6 engine that has been in Jeeps since the 60's, evolved over the decades. It is tried-and-true technology. Some TJ's come with a 4-cylinder engine. The JK's offer one engine: a V6 adapted from Chrysler minivans. It's slightly more powerful than the inline-6, requires higher RPM's, and there are a lot of varied opinions as to whether it is a "Jeep-worthy" engine.
The CJ's mentioned above (old-style, 1941-1986) have a lot of appeal and nostalgia, but will require more maintenance, are a rough highway ride, and on-road safety features are very outdated. The YJ (square headlights) were supposed to be a CJ improved for highway use. What they ended up as (IMHO) is slight refinement on highway with less offroad capability. Most YJ's I see offroad are heavily modified.
TJ/JK packages include SE, X, Sport, Sahara, Rubicon, Unlimited, and Rubicon Unlimited. A breakdown of those are:
The Rubicon package is entirely for offroad. If you are not particularly interested in going offroad, do NOT get a Rubicon, it's a whole lot of coin for a lot of features you'll never use. If you are wanting to take it offroad, you will be ecstatic to drive a Rubi.
Unlimited means "long". On TJ's, it's a slightly longer Jeep, giving more cargo and back seat room. On JK's, Unlimited refers to the 4-door model.
"SE" is a bare-bones TJ with a 4-cylinder engine. The 4-cylinder engine gives slightly over 20 MPG, not a huge improvement over the 6-cylinder because Wranglers are so heavy.
"X" is a bare-bones TJ with a 6-cylinder engine. It's also the base-level JK.
"Sport" is essentially a well-equipped "X" model TJ.
"Sahara" is a collection of upgrade features that vary slightly from year to year. Usually it includes color schemes, fancier wheel rims, cruise control, nicer stereo, etc.
Engines
97-03 TJ SE: 2.5L 4-cyl (fair)
04-06 TJ SE: 2.4L 4-cyl (better)
97-06 TJ (all but SE): 4.0L inline-6 (GREAT!)
07 JK: 3.8L V6 (Jury still out, me no like).
Manual transmissions:
97-00 Aisin AX-15 5-speed (6-cyl), AX-5 5-speed (4-cyl).
01-04 New Venture NV3500 5-speed (stronger, noisier).
05-07 Mercedes NSG-370 6-speed, very nice!
Automatic Transmissions: there have been two
97-03 3-speed
04-07 4-speed, much improved
Hope this is helpful. Hope I didn't step on anyone's toes -- a lot of opinion mixed in with the facts.

I would discourage anybody from getting a newer model Wrangler. Get one made before Chrystler bought out Jeep. I have a 1991 and it still runs great with well over 100k miles. The new ones just aren't as good and durable. They're made more for college kids on road trips than for Jeeping. Pretty depressing. I don't know what I'll do when my '91 finally gives out.

wranglers are very nice... im working on buying one now...
the ride isnt bad... some say its too stiff and some say its too soft... i like it... you feel the road, but its not bad...
maintence isnt too bad either... friends of mine say its easy to do it yourself (depending on your DIY ability, and knowledge of cars) but from what i have seen, they really stand up...
mileage is similar to other trucks... not fantastic, but you get miles per gallon and not gallon per miles...
im am going for a base model wrangler 4x4 (HAS TO BE 4X4... a 2x4 jeep is... well... pointless...) im sticking with the base model because i plan to add after market parts... plus factory accessories are really expensive
nothing beats a test drive though... if you can, find a dealership that has a little dirt area to see what its like offroad... or find a friend that has one... friends are normally willing to let you do more to it than a dealership...
take a look at the website www.jeep.com
you can equip and price a jeep there...
and if you want aftermarket parts, check out

ted's right (see above)
1. 91 is a Chrysler
2, ride is akin to horse and buggy
3. maintenance is easy, but often
4. gas mileage is not applicable
5. The less plastic on your jeep the cooler you look
6. Chicks dig jeeps, everybody does really especially with big tires.

I've got a Sport...5 speed...love it...mileage is what you would expect from a truck...not a Toyota....the ride is smooth, although some of my friends of larger stature find it cramped for space...basic care just like anything else...that's my imput, there are some real experts you'll be hearing from...my advice...buy the sport
