The key is to keep your immune system at it's best. Every day our immune systems are being compromised by bad diet, lack of exercise, stress and pollutants. Keep your nutrition on track. Anti oxidants are important and nutrtional products can help take up the slack. Make sure you do your research on supplements to ensure high quality.

lol antioxidants boost your immune system.... i dont even think that person knows what an antioxidant is or how they work. antioxidants (which includes vitamin C) neutralize free radicals (which are highly reactive waste products made from your cell's metabolic waste) before the can cause cell damage. they have absolutely nothing to do with infections or your immune system. it might be able to slighly reduce your chances of getting cancer later on in life but i dont think it does anything for preventing colds

there are ways to boost your immune system (some prescription drugs can stimulate white blood cell production), but i tend to agree with your friend that there arent really any good ways to do it over the counter. certain vitamins and supplements can help in some people, but only if the person's immune system isnt funtioning normally because they are deficient of that product. and most people dont have a deficiency. lots of alternative med people say echinaciea can, but its been pretty well disproven by the scientific community. there may be an herb out there that hasnt been discovered that mimics the chemical signal to your body to create more white blood cells like the prescription drugs do, but im not aware of anything on the market that has actually been proven to work

regular excercise and getting enough sleep (releives physiologic stress) are probably the only feasible and effective ways to really "boost" your immune system, its pretty well established that people who excercise get sick less, as well as have less of many other problems like heart disease, diabetes, etc.
