You must provide over half of her income and provide a home for her. You can go to www.irs.gov, individual, forms and publications, publication 17, what is a dependent.

This should give you your answer.

good luck & blessing

If you are paying more than half of her support, then you can claim her as a dependent. If she uses her disability income toward her own support, you have to count that when you figure whether or not you pay over half of her support.

If you can claim her, you put her name, social security number, and the other required info in the "dependents" area of your return on form 1040 or 1040A - you can't file a 1040EZ and claim a dependent.

she must meet all of the following tests.
she would have to be a citizen or resident of the U.S., or a resident of Canada or Mexico ( if mom lives in Mexico and you send her support this does not exclude you from claiming her as a dependent).she must be a member of your household or meet the relationship test( a mother would), you must provide over one half of her support. (this includes all aspects of support and in effect is everything that she receives even that t.v. for Christmas from your cousin). she must not file a joint return with anyone, nor have a tax liability for any year in which you claim her (unless only to receive a refund of tax paid/withheld). she must have less than 3300.00 in countable income ( ss does count, and the bank interest would as well as the rental income from her former main home and any other income) she may receive.. A good way a parent or child (in your case) can insure that they maintain a dependents eligibility to be claimed in the current or futures is to to have the dependent bank or save their social security benefits (or wages from that summer job). if saved it is exempt from the calculation of support. and almost always insures the dependents eligibility to be claimed.
