Maybe you need to move instead of getting a dog. If where you live is that bad - the next time you get robbed, all your stuff will be gone and you'll have a dead dog.

Do you personally get mugged or does your house get broken into? If it is the latter - get better security for your house - not a dog. Please get a dog that you are interested in training well and have the time for, not just because you think a big dog will protect you. Too many people, or their children or neighbors, end up getting hurt by their own dogs because they got a dog for protection and didn't properly train it. Good Luck.
See the link below for Petfinders. They list tons of dogs at shelters near you who are waiting for new homes.

Why don't you move into a different area?
Having a good mean dog is not necessarily going to protect you. What are you going to do if they shoot your dog. You certainly can't get much protection from that, can you?
The dog can't be around you all the time.

Adopt one from your local animal shelter...if you love him he will be there for you when someone tries to rob you. I don't know if he will solve the problem of stopping the actual robbery but at least he may be able to notify you when some enter your home to rob you.
