Never heard of this fault But from what you say its either the selector cable has become loose or broken off unfortunately its hard to tell without seeing the car if anything else can be causing it. A good way to check is too remove the radio and see if anything is broken or become loose to remove the radio all you need is to cut the corners of a wire shirt hanger insert them into the holes an pull both levers away from eachother take a light and look. If that fails i suggest you take it to your local ford dealer

Defrost is the default setting on the heater when the control valve fails. The most common cause of failure is a broken of disconnected vacuum line. Look under the dash with a good flashlight at the back of the controls for a vacuum line hanging or split, and replace or repair as needed. If that's beyond what you can do, take it in, shouldn't be overly expensive to fix.

Hi. I has the same problem. Turned out the vacuum line in the engine compartment got too close to something hot and partially melted, closing it. I found the closure by running a small wire through the tubing, then cut out the bad section and used some rubber tubing to reconnect the ends. Worked great.

It is your draft deflect plate what is in the wrong posit on ,check to see if you move the lever it controls the air flow ,the lever might not be moving the plate ? .
