Religiosity is negatively correlated with educational attainment and socioeconomic status. I suppose poor and impoverished people have a great motivation to wish for a good god or afterlife because this life is so crappy for them. And I guess affluent people can satisfy more of their desires in this life, thus having less need for a good god or afterlife because they already have it pretty good.

It can and does affect religion the same as anything else. That is why some Christians behave like nazis and/or vote Republican and others of us founded and/or joined unions or fought on the revolutionary side in the Nicaraguan revolution. The economic background of our pastors also determines which of our political choices they understand and support. Those priests and nuns I know with a deeper connection to working class and homeless people get politically active around issues other than pro-life and even their pro-life positions become progressive anti-war arguments.

Personally I don't think it affects it all that much. The only way I could see it affecting someone would be maybe if they were poor they would be more likely to pray for God's help than someone who's wealthy and feels like they acheived all their success on their own without God's help. But it all depends on what the person believes really.

I agree with poseidenneptune. I think that if you find yourself having to struggle for the basics of life, you will be more likely to turn to religion...or anything that offers some hope that there's something more to life than the daily struggles of living.

The more one feels his life hinges entirely upon the the depth of his foxhole and the integrity of his god the more he is likely to dig feverishly with his hands and pray furiously for a shovel.

I believe that the more "well off" we are in life, the less we depend on God for help. We, meaning society, to put it frankly feel pretty damn invincible. People who may be less well off, simply put need something bigger than themselves to redeem them from the struggles they may be facing.
