Personally, I wouldn't have spent that much on a pup. There are so many dogs that are put to sleep every day because they don't have homes and yet, there are some people that will spend loads of money on just one pup. I'm not saying you did the wrong thing by buying your pup, because if it is what you were looking for, then that is great. All I'm saying is it doesn't really matter how much $$ you spend on a dog, that doesn't guarantee the health of the dog or temperment. Plus, MOST dogs that do cost that much are often very tiny or often called 'teacup', 'doll face' pups. i would NEVER suggest anyone buying these pups, especially from a breeder who breeds dogs for size. These dogs tend to not live as long and have bad health problems, often times not right off but later on. I would tell anyone to buy a healthy dog at an average weight. A lot of times very tiny dogs brains dont fully develop. I don't know what kind of dog you bought, but that's just some insight for you.

It really depends on the dog. If it is AKC registered and has champion bloodlines and if the breed is expensive, the dog can cost $2,000. Which is okay if you're looking to breed or show the dog. However, if you are just looking for a pet then you probably paid more than necessary, unless it's a rare or expensive breed. There are thousands of great dogs at the animal shelters waiting for a loving home. You can buy one for about $100 (cost of shots and processing fee). In the end, the cost of the dog is irrelevant. It's the love and companionship you share with your dog that matters most.

I routinely spend much more then that on dogs. I spent $12.000 on a dog several years a go. It was a competition dog. Show dogs out of Germany cost tens of thousands of Dollars and quality puppies imported from Europe can cost $5000. Face it, good dogs cost good money and no shelter dog is going to equal that of a top dog that was imported. A friend in California just spend $32.000 on a 4 year old Shepherd that he bought for competition in the IPO trials. Good dogs are not easy to find and when you do, you have to pay REAL money for them, it all depends on what you are into.

A dog is worth what it's worth to you. Generally, if from a good breeder who breeds quality AKC champs and depending on the breed, $2000 isn't a bad price. If it's a red-nose pit from the guy that fights his adults, then no, you got screwed. I doubt that's the case, though, because everyone knows that pits go for a few hundred, tops, regardless of parantage.
If you're questioning what you've already done, quit. What's done is done, and it's hard to fix monetary mistakes.

IT depends on the dog you got, but it would have been nice to get one from a shelter, so you can save two lives (the animal you rescue, and the one that can go into the shelter because you made room for it). Maybe next time?

Not if you can afford it. Next time I get a dog, I'm going to rescue one from the Humane Society though.

Holy catfish! You mean you couldn't have gone down to the local animal shelter and adopted a perfectly acceptable dog while spending only enough to get it it's shots and it's license? Heck, you could'a done that, saved a life and donated a hundred bucks to the shelter from what you saved. And your adopted dog would've given you as much companionship and love as your ritzyassed two thousand dollar mutt!
