What I've read so far in the answers is that God is testing us, God is trying to get our attention, God is mean, God only pays attention to spiritual things, not physical things. Or he just sits on the sidelines and watches. Wow. Pretty bad theology. Somehow Man deserves better, God should give us life on a silver platter, and bring everyone to heaven.
How about a God who would be perfectly righteous in wiping out all of humanity? Didn't he very nearly do this with a flood back in Genesis? What about the threat in Malachi 4:6? God rules this universe and He can do as He pleases. Go ahead and put this under the "mean" category if you like, and tell God, like Job did, how innocent you are.
As for what point there is in praying, theologically free will has to do with the ability to look to God for salvation, not whether we can make day-to-day decisions. No mainstream Christian belief denies free will, only whether we have the ability to make a choice for God, given our sinful condition. Although there is evidence of God's work in history in the Bible, and he does predestine his own unto salvation as identified in certain verses, I do not believe that life is just "mapped out" for everyone. If we stand condemned before the Lord in our sins anyway, life doesn't need to be mapped out. What we need in place of a map is a Savior who allows fellowship i.e. PRAYER LIFE, with the Father for those He has chosen from before the foundations of the world.

Man caused the holocaust.
Man caused the affects of Katrina to be far worse by destroying the wetlands that serve as a natural burrier between land and sea. Hurricanes play an important role in the health of the planet. Man needs to understand this and stop destroying our natural defenses.
God appointed us as caretakers of this fabulous planet. Instead, we think we can remake it to suit our desires. God doesn’t cause disasters to happen to punish us. They happen in their normal cycles and we suffer because we put our greed and need to control everything above our understanding of the great forces that keep this planet in balance.
