Why would the eight hikers(three who got stranded w/ Velvet)go to a place in the worst part of winter, where lives have been lost, that has a history of avalanches? If they needed a rush, jump out of a plane.Common sense would come in handy at times.

I do not understand it either, but they are always going to be people doing things that I would not choose to do. I have friends that participate in ice fishing for days on end, and although I enjoy fishing, huddling in a shack in the cold on ice that could break or shift......not.

Sometimes people have to "push the envelope" to feel alive. I enjoy having fun, and spending time outdoors in all types of weather; but I do not wish to endanger my life and the lives of others while doing so.

There have always been people who enjoy living dangerously, it is too bad that other people have to rescue them when things go bad.

Here! Here! I think people who climb mountains, especially during the winter, are taking their lives into their own hands. I also believe that they are being irresponsible and putting the lives of the rescuers, although trained, in needless danger as well.

But you've got to give them a little props - the did have a beacon.

Suppose they thought they could reach the peak. They were prepared with transmitter and a dog. Maybe they wanted to push the envelope and see why the others didn't make it.

Thats part of what hiking and mountaineering is about, testing yourself against the elements. I don't think they cost much in rescue dollars and sometimes one that is this easy and safe is good for rescue team training. This one was not so bad and they self rescued in a sense by being prepared.
