Hi,
My 10 month old jack russell puppy will always run under the bed when she steals something just enough so know one can reach her. She is in her third level of obedience school (advanced level). However, like a typical jack russell she is very stubborn and often only does things when she wants. I don't want to give her a treat so she comes out from under the bed because it is just encouraging her to do it again. However, if I don't act fast, she will end up chewing something valuable. She understands leave it, other basic commands, etc. but obviously doesnt care to listen when she has something she really shouldn't! She has plenty of attention all day so it's not like I'm not giving her enough exercise. As much as she loves her own toys, they do not always work as a way for her to come out. She is a great dog and I have never had any problems as far as her causing any destruction in the house when I'm home or when she is left alone. Any suggestions?

Keep working on the obedience training! Obedient dogs will drop ANYTHING you tell them to, since they recognize you as the boss! My dog will run after and often catch poor baby bunnies and birds, but as soon as I see and say something, out pops that little baby and the dog sits down. She looks really confused and like she REALLY wants to grab that little critter, but she doesn't.

I suggest having your dog sit or lie down on the floor, totally relaxed. Then put objects that she might normally like to steal about 1-2 feet away from her. As soon as she looks interested at all, tell her "No" or just even make a noise that sounds like you aren't happy. She should stop and look at you. If not, you need to try this lesson with a leash. Gradually put more and more objects in front of her until she learns that she is not allowed to touch them. Then put a toy down and do the same thing - don't let her have it, then hand it to her. This way, she will gradually learn that YOU have the power to say what she can and can't play with - not her. Try this over and over and she should learn it.

I can totally sympathize, my lab puppy is also a consumate thief :)

It sounds like your girl thinks of the space under the bed as a den, if so, she's probably not gonna listen to a darn thing you say while she's in there. I think your best bet is to block her from getting under the bed for a while. Why my guy was little enough to fit under the bed, I proped up long boards of MDF that I had around the bed to block him from crawling under it. It's not pretty, but it works and at very little inconvenience to you.

My Boston does the same and they "KNOW" when they are wrong. The entire terrier breeds are very smart critters.

I have closed all the doors to the bedrooms so now when she runs down the hall to hide under a bed, she is stuck and finally backs down and gives you what she has taken. The look on her face when she knows the doors are closed and she just backed herself into a corner is priceless.

Start storing things under the bed, put cardboard around the bed stead so she can't get in. Go after her with the broom to push her out. Use a spary bottle and keep squirting her til she comes out, Close the bedroom door.

She is a jack.....Its woven in the DNA of this nutty but intelligent little bugger. Train her all you want...lol.

You wanna jack up a jack. Talk to her, then walk away....ignoring her. Will drive her NUTS. Mine goes crazy. He will fly out of his hiding spot in a second. She is playing games with you. Want another tip? Get a cheap sqeaky toy and go to town with it....OUT she comes. Shut the door. JRT owners know from experience. Make sure its shut....mine can open them too! Happy jacking! LMAO

put things under the bed so she can't get in there, eventually she will stop relying on it as a safe place to hide and you can remove the stuff. even empty cardboard boxed would probably work, just something to take up her hiding space.

my wheaten terrier does that with our dining room table. terriers are very energetic and smart. they go under there because they think of it as a game and they know you cant get them...the best thing i can think of is blocking the bed
