it became worst since he came back from grooming 1 week ago..brought him to new groomer who recommended crew cut due to his skin prob..thought it maybe better for him, hence agreed to it. however, when he's back, my poor dog became very withdrawn n fierce - he just bited at anyone who went near him! now he's better, just that we noticed some sores on his hind leg n his excessive nibbling worried us. hence we are thinking of bringing him to vet..but we worried he may become withdrawn after the vet visit....any advise?

You say your dog has skin problems. Could he be allergic to something in his diet. Corn or wheat in dog food can cause skin problems and if he already has irritated skin the shampoo might irritate the skin even more. If it is not his diet the skin problem could be caused from flea bite allergy. A check up with the vet may answer your question.

Try a different groomer for sure.
I am a groomer and I strongly believe that your dog should NOT have been behaving that way when he got home.
He should have at least been happy to be home.
Even if the shampoo caused more itching he should not have been acting withdrawn or fierce.
Sitting around doing nothing but scratching and chewing his feet more, would sound more like a reaction to the shampoo. But not behaving differently.
Unless this is a behavior that he has shown in the past when he 'just doesnt feel like being bothered.'
That just doesnt sound right to me.
A trip to the vet would be your best bet. Make an appointment and stay there with him instead of dropping him off.

I may be wrong for saying this, but if a dog comes home from staying somewhere else away from you...and he is acting withdrawn....it wasnt a pleasant visit.

Sorry. I hope he feels better soon, and please do take him to your vet.

sounds like the new groomer was wrong about the new shampoo. Or did she clip him to short and it irrated his skin? A trip to the vets is in order just to help releave his itching. You didn't say weather your in a cold weather climate or not but if they put snow melt or salt down in your area then that could also be irratating his paws. If you walk him outside then gently wipe his paws off before or soon after you bring him in.
Oh and don't bring him back to that groomer either.

sounds like some sort of skin reaction. it could be allergic reaction to the soaps and shampoos. I would take him to the vet for a quick overview and have them look at his paws. Might get a script for the itching.

that could be allergies. dogs will chew on their feet until the make them raw and sore. we have seen dogs come in to the vet clinic where i work and have almost chewed their tail off because of allergies, their tale will then have to be amputated. you should take him to your vet and he can give you some meds to help with the itching.

Please take him to the Vet. This sounds like your dog is suffering from allergies.
