Riding a bike builds muscle strength, particularly in the calves, gluteus muscles, hamstrings and quadriceps. It also improves cardiovascular health. ( lungs ) And because cycling is gentle on your joints, you can ride as much as you want without risk of overuse or injury, even if you have joint or back problems.

Be sure to Warm-Up and Cool-Down before you ride full out, ride at an easy pace for five to 10 minutes, until you break a light sweat. This will warms up your muscles and elevates your heart rate.

Before you end your ride, slow your pace to let your heart rate descend gradually to its normal speed.

Be sure to stretch the following major muscle groups, Calves Gluteus muscles (a.k.a. glutes) Hamstrings Quadriceps (a.k.a. quads) Upper and Lower Back. after riding (exercising ) to prevent injury and promote flexibility and prevent soreness.

First of all, to the individual whose answer appears above mine. The Achilles is a tendon not a muscle.

Now then, cycling will work your gluts, quads, hams, calves, abs, and lower back. And let's not forget your neck (as all of us trying to get back from winter layoff can attest to).

Pretty near all of them. It is harder to ride uphill, the steeper the grade, the greater the stress.
