First, you will want to clean and disinfect the cage once your hamster passes away, since a bird may not take well to a cage that was once inhabited by a rodent...they get a little nervous and it may not be healthy for the bird.

Next, I assume you will get rid of any hamster playthings in there, and replace them with appropriate bird playthings. Depending on the bird, they usually just need one or two wooden perches, perhaps a metal swing, and a water feeder and seed container.

I don't believe that this would cost much, but you can find out from PetSmart or another pet store what the items will cost next time you are in a mall.

You may also want to confirm with the pet store whether the hamster cage would be suitable for the bird you are planning to buy. If you have a small cage and get a large bird, again the bird may not thrive.

You can't put a bird in a hamster cage. If you want a cheap bird cage. Check ebay. Every once in a while you can get a good deal. I got a T-9 cage (from the www.drsfostersmith.com) for $30 and it is normally a $90 cage and it was brand new. I love the cage and my bird is happier than ever.

As for accersories you need at least 3 toys to start out for your bird. They usually run from about $4 and up. You will need more to change out every few weeks so your bird does not get bored. (Bell toys are good) I would also buy a swing because birds love swings (swings have a wide price range depending on how fancy you want cheapest is usually about $4). You will also need a ladder for your bird, which the size of the ladder depends on the size of the cage and the size of the bird (prices are $3 and up). You will also need a cuttle bone which can usually be found for $.99. Most cages come with food dishes. If you have to buy those they range from about $3 and up. I know i got a set of 2 for $2.99 at PetCo.

Then do not forget to get spray millet for an occansional treat for your bird. (do not give this to your bird all the time because it can cause it to become over weight). This usually cost $2.99 for a bag at Petco. It is always nice to welcome a new bird to your home with this treat. I usually cut it in half for my parakeet because he usually isn't able to eat the whole thing before he poops on it, my lovebird on the other hand can skin one in about 15 minutes.

For the toys there are packages with 3 or 4 toys, but I do not recommend getting those because they are cheaply made and easier for the birds to destory. Basically you pay for what you get.

Basically you will be spending $30-40 when buying accessories for your new bird cage. I can never get out of a pet store when buying things for my birds without spending $15. Toys are expensive. My birds have never destoryed a toy I just spoil them.

Aw! The poor hamster! In his old age - I'd first make sure that you spend your money on a few home comforts for him before thinking about his home as a potential bird cage.

Give him a few things that would make his life complete. Even simple stuff like a small twig or stick that he can nibble on and tear the bark off - would improve his life - and probably add a few months or years to him.

So make him as happy as you can ... and when he does eventually enter hamster heaven - you'll know you gave him the very best!

check around at garage sales or flea markets. Bird items like waht you are looking for are cheap if not free. I gave away 3 bird cages and accessories that I did not need.

A new bird cage is quite cheap. Don't let on to the hampster that you've gone off him. Let him pass away thinking that you still loved him.

Your bird would be injured or killed in a hampster cage. Cages can be purchased fairly cheap. Get the biggest one that you can afford.
