I live in Naperville IL (Dupage County, School district 204). I got a house tax bill in mid of 2006. I was supposed to pay it in two parts by May 1st and Sept 1st.

My question is. Did I pay taxes for 2005 or 2006?

Du Page County has a phone hotline for tax bill questions. A quick phone call to them at (630) 407-5540 should give you your answer. Good luck! :-)

I suspect you paid the 2005 taxes (Cook county certainly works that way). You tax bill will say what year they are for. Since you paid them in 2006, for federal and state income tax purposes, they apply to your 2006 income taxes (federal deduction, Illinois credit).

Sounds like 2006. That is the same way I have to pay my taxes.

If your question is what year can you deduct it in, it's the year when you actually paid the bill. If your question is what period did each payment actually cover, that's a question for your local tax office.
