When having a tooth extracted at the dentist today I may have swallowed part of the tooth. I'm told that this isn't a problem unless the tooth actually wasn't swallowed, but rather inhaled or aspirated in the lungs. What would the first symptoms of this having happened be, and how long would it take for them to appear?

I think you might notice if you had breathed it in cos you would be coughing loads!

You would know about it by now if it was in your lung, you must have swallowed it.

It should have no side-effects aside from a little digestive discomfort. The acid in your stomach will at partially/fully erode it anyway. If any does exit the other end, make sure you polish it before leaving it for the tooth-fairy!

I don't think you it would have gone down your airways because if it did you would most likely have choked or coughed when it went down. If it was only a tiny piece though I think you will have felt some discomfort by now! It is most likely that you swallowed it and this is no problem - it will just come out the other end in due course.

It won't bother you at all. However, you will "pass" it soon. due to i swallowed a whole tooth and then later in life i swallowed my mercury filling.....it came out the other end.

Swallowing a tooth is a BIG problem.
