They use Lidocaine, Carbocaine and Marcaine as the primary anesthetics although there are many others available and their use is as the dentist deems necessary. There are different ones used for different procedures and different areas of the mouth, some that require epinephrine and some don't require it. Some are to control the bleeding, keeping it at a minimum, which is used for patients who are on blood thinners or in areas that are likely to bleed heavily making it impossible for the dental restoration material used to work. While some others are used for the duration that they last, long lasting numbing effects for surgery or extractions where the patient needs extra time being anesthetized for control of pain until the medication has time to take effect. It really depends on which procedure, and the patient, as to which anesthetic is used. No "Novocaine" isn't used in the dental office anymore, but everyone still refers to any anesthetic as "Novocaine." Trust your dentist to use which ever anesthetic he chooses for your particular procedure. Hope I've been of some help with this.

If you want to make sure that the dentist is not using dirty needles, then let him place the needle infront of you.Actually there is no guarantee about the needles especially that they don't come wrapped. He just picks up one out of a box.Anyway needles go blunt in 2 or 3 times, there is little chance he 'd be using dirty needles.

I went to the dentist to get some teeth pulled and they used novocaine. So, I think they're still using it.
