People often are confused with the spelling and pronounciation of my last name. Phonetically it sounds like it should be spelled Kinnock.

The name is derived from a Lower German word "Knaa(c)k" which means "bone" (High German/ modern Standard German: "Knochen"). So the name was probably given to an ancestor of yours who was a butcher in northern Germany.

Knaak is German. The free 1880 USA Census records at Ancestry show that the surname came from many German-speaking areas -- Prussia, Switzerland, Baden.
