I have a 1996 Ford Explorer. The problem is that when I put it in Drive it doesn't go forward - like it isn't in gear. If I hit the brake most of the time it pops into gear - OR I can put it in 2nd and go forward for a couple of feet and then put it into drive and it works fine. Can you please tell me what the problem is? Thanks

I am moving overseas and going to start trying to sell the vehicle around March 15th - I hate to put money into it. I just replaced the transmission in my volvo. I am becoming car poor.

Incognito: hi your problem Could be a linkage problem not lining up correctly . An electrical problem . Or a transmission fluid problem . First off I would check the transmission fluid first .. Read the owners manual or talk to a dealer first on the correct process to check the fluid . Methods may vary .. If this is OK!! Then get recommendations from friends or family about their experiences . And pick a reliable shop ... Remember one thing most all dealers farm their transmission work out .. If you knew anyone that worked for a dealer . They may tell you who takes care of there transmission work .. Good Luck

i have a 1993 explorer with tranny problems. their trannys are either realy tough or peices of crap. 5-6 years ago my trany lost a high gear, then i got it back, except when it is cold,3 years ago i had to drive in park, about a year ago i lost park completely. i dont have the funds for a new one so for the past 6 years i have it serviced, fluid and filter changed. they know me there and they are very careful when removing the pan because of all the little pieces that have broke inside. do the recomended but thats a pretty long history after being told my car wont last more then 1 year. now, 6 1/2 years latter its still on the road.

First off, when was the last time you had your trans fluid changed? Second, it sounds like either a solenoid or the bands and clutches have gone out on it. My advice is take it to Ford. Have their tranny guy look at it and get an estimate that way. It may cost you more to go through Ford, but you will have the Ford warranty on it after the work is done! Good luck and feel free to email me if you have any questions!

Definitely look at the transmission fluid level, it sounds as though you run a automatic transmission, unfortunately they are very sensitive to too little transmission fluid, and too much transmission fluid, so don't over fill.

Transmission seals are hard and needs transmission overhaul, or you are low in transmission fluid

it sounds like the clutch in your automatic transmission is slipping. it shouldnt be that expensive to fix.
